4/6/2018 0 Comments R.E.S.P.E.C.TTo me, showing respect is something that is not just looked for, but I think that it is so easy to be respectful towards others. Whether it is a student, teacher, parent, or another human being, we can ALWAYS choose to be respectful and kind. I have had teachers who aren’t respectful and when that happens the entire classroom is put into a hostile, sad environment and the focus of teaching and learning is lost. When teaching in a classroom the students and teacher both need to respect one another for the classroom to be positive and up lifting. Students need to realize that the teacher is in charge and is looking for the students best interest, but the teacher also needs to look at school from a child’s perspective. Multiple homework assignments for multiple classes or a student who struggles with certain topics are all ways that a teacher needs to think about approaching a classroom full of students with different needs and wants.

2/16/2018 0 Comments Beyond the BlackboardScenario 1: Adrian has been diagnosed with mild intellectual disability. Although it is not outwardly noticeable to his friends, he struggles with processing information, especially in math. Most of his problem seems to stem from difficulty keeping up in class. What could you do as his teacher? Be specific. I chose this scenario because I have a student in my first grade class who also had intellectual disabilities and we create many different activities and games for him to be able to learn the same material as everyone else, but in a different way to which he can understand it. Another way we have helped this student is giving him a buddy. This buddy sits next to him, partners with him in certain assignments, and basically is always there to help him when he needs it. By doing this both the student with the disability and the helper benefit from the experience. It gives the student with the disability better social skills and makes him to feel more comfortable in class and the helping student learns how to work with a child that he might not necessary understand how to work will and handle before. The kids become better at working with others and those that can be different then them.
2/1/2018 0 Comments The leader in me!Leadership Observed: For me, I think in order to be a great teacher you need to be a leader and have leadership skills in order to control a classroom, talk in you grade meetings with the other teachers, and overall teach a classroom full of students. 1. I distinctly remember my 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Lemons, was an amazing teacher and leader. She was a role model for us to look up to and we wanted to listen to her because she showed us that she was the teacher and we are students. In order for us to learn she needed to lead and we needed to follow. That year I had just moved to Texas from Arizona and she showed me how to lead a classroom and teach students at the same time. I learned a lot that year. 2. Another example of a great leader and teacher is Ron Clark in the Ron Clark movie. He went to teach and a low school in a very difficult class and he displayed great leadership qualities that helped him to turn that crazy classroom into a safe, loving room where the students listened and respected their teacher. 3. I also think a great leader is someone who steps up when know one will even if they end up standing alone. Many different circumstances have occurred in high school when you might be tempted to doing things against your standards or morals and I have shown my true leadership qualities by standing by my standards and sometimes that required me to be the only one or the first one to do that. My leadership in action! I have been involved in many different organizations at my high school including: -Student Council -Key Club -Interact Club -National Honor Society -National Art Honor Society -Blue Blazers -T.A.F.E. All of these clubs have given me opportunities to learn about leadership skills and Interact club specifically gave me the opportunity to attend a life changing camp called camp RYLA this summer and it taught me how to be a leader and how I can incorporate that into my present life and future life. I learned about different personalities and how I can work with all of those different personalities and how to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. Student Council is a student run organization and I have been given that chance to lead different events and take a leadership position.

12/15/2017 0 Comments Semester 1 at a glance....What have you enjoyed the most? This semester I have enjoyed getting to teach more and experience new teaching methods. Since this is my 2nd year of teaching I am getting more freedom in teaching the students and this semester I have been helping to lead reading groups. I teach the kids sounds and also do games and activities with them. I feel like I am getting more leadership opportunities this year and I am loving getting to do new things. Reading is the subject I teach now along with writing and it is very fun to learn about what to do in that subject since last year I taught math. I am also given more opportunity to do bulletin boards which is helping me to practice for the future. How have you seen yourself grow over the last few months? I am grown tremendously by growing in my teaching. I started the year off a little nervous because i had such a great year before and I was worried to have a new group of kids but I have been able to adapt to changes and feel a lot more confident. I am more aware of my surroundings and how to watch the kids while helping others at the same time. I am able to control a classroom better and discipline in a correct way. What has surprised you the most about teaching? I am super surprised about how technologically savy the students are. I go to help them on the IPad and sometimes they have already fix the problem and show me how to fix it instead. They have so many apps they can use for projects, to take pictures of their work and share it so their parents can see, video tape their voices to match their work, and so on. I am surprised at how much the school classrooms have changed since I have been in elementary school. The different games, technology, equipment, and supplies are so different. I never had a smart board in first grade. My teacher only used the whiteboard which is still used now, but not as much. How do you know your students are learning and applying the information you are teaching them? I can remember when one day I was just not having the best day. I had multiple tests, I was overloaded with homework, and I was SOOOOOOOO tired. I contemplated going to class to see my kids that day but I knew that they would make me feel better. I went to my 1st grade class and one boy immediately went up to me and said, "Ms.Annelise, you are so pretty today." I almost cried right then and there because that little compliment that probably meant nothing to him lifted me up and made me feel so much better. A smile appeared on my face and I felt so grateful for teaching. That is why I do it. Those little moments when the students learn something and show their love for you is what makes me love to teach. How do you know your students are learning and applying the information you are teaching them? I can tell that my students are learning and applying the information I am teaching them because through their work and more time with them I can see them implement the methods and information I give them into their daily work. After teaching them about the cover, title page, and different attributes in a book the next time they came to my table to read they could tell everything I taught them back to me and it proved that they listened and are retaining the information. Have your experiences changed your views on teaching, children, elementary, etc.? When I started in Ready, Set, Teach I had no expectations and didn't know what I was doing. I had no experience teaching in a classroom and I had no experience teaching lessons or about TEKS. Being in the classroom for 2 years now I have a whole new perspective on how a classroom is run and how much preparation and effort goes into teaching students, especially elementary school aged children. I see how much discipline you need to have and the control you need to establish with your students in order to actually learn and teach things. You can have amazing, wonderful students who listen and follow every direction and some who may want to have a power struggle and fight in class. But after 2 years in an elementary school classroom I am now POSITIVE that I want to major in elementary education and teach in an elementary school when I am older. What impact have your students had on you? Oh my goodness where do I even begin? My students these last 2 years have truly impacted me immensely. I have learned patience, compassion, discipline, hard work, perseverance, and more from these students. I have learned how to keep going when things don't work and how to be flexible to knew ideas. I have learned how to control a class and how to build relationships with my students in order to teach them more effectively. These kids have made my student teaching year the absolute best and most rewarding. What impact has your supporting teaching had on you? Teaching has had such a positive impact on me and my life. It is a way that I am able to destress and focus on the positives in my life. I am able to shut out the world and focus on impacting and teaching my students. Teaching has helped to support me in school and has helped me to choose a college and a future profession. What are you looking forward to the most next semester? Next semester I am looking forward to teaching more and getting to be involved in things like field day, their field trip, and more fun days. I am hoping to get more experience in teaching lessons in front of the class and maybe getting to do more bulletin boards. I have made 2 bulletin boards already and have had a lot of fun looking for ideas and advancing in what I do. What is one goal you have for the spring? One goal that I have for the spring is to come up with a station or make a lesson activity that can help the students to understand and learn about a new topic in reading and writing. Some kind of game to interactive activity that can participate in and learn while having fun. What is one reason you really appreciate your supporting teacher? I appreciate Mrs. Miller because she has chosen to take me under her wing and teach me all she knows about teaching and does it without being asked; she volunteered. She has given me soooooooo much knowledge about education and the way to teach your students. Mrs. Miller taught me "“That all children can learn, but we must meet them at the level that they are for them to reach their full potential." I am so grateful to have been assigned to Mrs. Miller and have been able to learn from her from the past 2 years.
12/1/2017 0 Comments TEKSRight now my class is learning about main idea and details and how they correlate to one another and how the kids can identify them from a story. Above is the TEKS for first grade and it talks specifically about teaching main idea. I usually sit with the students and teach them main idea in small reading groups so the kids can learn how to find it in the easy to read books. My teacher has also done anchor charts with the kids on the carpet so they can learn hands on. My teacher uses handouts like the ones above and puts them in reading stations like "read-to-self" and "listen-to-reading" so the kids can practice finding the main idea and supporting details.
11/27/2017 0 Comments GratitudeThis Thanksgiving I am thankful for my RYLA family. RYLA is a camp that I went to over summer of 2017 where I learned leadership qualities and teamwork exercises. My cabin members support me in everything I do and are my biggest cheerleaders. The person I am today is because of my RYLA family and the love and positivity they give me. They encouraged me and inspired me to go out of my comfort zone and try new things.
11/15/2017 0 Comments Attendances How many times in your site school, have you had to work with a student who has been absent? Between this year and last year I have not had a student that has missed constant school days in a consecutive time but there have been students that have missed school and it is hard in places for them to catch up and it is hard for the teacher to make time to set aside for that student to teach them all that they missed. Look at your own attendance record, have you missed class two times per month? If so, have you gotten behind in your work? I have missed school in the past for things like illness or medical issues and it is hard to miss school because you can fall behind and sometimes a lot of absences for a long period of time can cause you to not be able to catch up fully in every class. For teachers it can become stressful and time consuming to have to focus on teaching that one student that has missed multiple days and can make the class fall behind as well. Absences are hard to accommodate but if you have a really good teacher they will make sure to work really hard to get you caught up because they will have your best interest at heart. Three ideas of how to prevent student's getting behind due to absenteeism. What can be done to encourage good attendance?
1. Show Students They Are Important To YouStudents who know that you care about them are far more likely to come to school. While strategy one shows this at the group level, it is also critical to forge productive relationships with students individually. Students don’t always remember what you do, but they do remember how you made them feel. Make them feel important, accepted and cared for. Take the time to talk with them outside of the classroom, show an interest in their lives and genuine empathy for the things they are going through. However, don’t let this understanding lead you to excuse poor behaviour. 2. Refine Your Classroom Management If you combine strategies 1-3 with fair and consistent discipline, you will increase student attendance and student achievement. If I assume you have the basics in-hand (e.g. explicit expectations, rules, routines etc.), what specific aspects of classroom management will help you improve school attendance? The first thing to do is to recognise and praise industrious behaviour – things like genuinely wanting to do well at something, working hard to achieve it, and persisting even when things go wrong. The second is to nip small or potential issues in the bud, using techniques such as positive correction, redirection and warnings. However, the key strategy is what Robert Marzano calls ‘with-it-ness’ – a routine state of awareness about what is going on in the classroom. It is this with-it-ness that enables you to catch kids doing things right and to address minor misbehaviour without having to resort to punitive measures. 3. Ask Just One Thing Of ParentsPeople have been talking about the importance of parent involvement for decades, yet research shows that there is one thing that parents can do that will have far more impact than anything else. Students, whose parents value education, and more specifically attendance, are far less likely to have high levels of avoidable absence. Therefore, you should spend time explaining the value of education to parents. There is a clear is link between education and students’ subsequent health, wealth and happiness. You need to get this general message to parents and ask them to reinforce it with their children. You also need to couple this general message with a specific one about the link between school attendance and how well students subsequently do at school. Repeat this message at every opportunity, including parent information nights, newsletters and parent-teacher interviews. 11/9/2017 0 Comments What do rules do?My Classroom Rules
